Carlos Walter Butin (1917 – 2007)

An excellent draftsman and sculptor, through an unmistakable personal style, Carlos W. Butin surprises with the balance achieved between a classicist conception of art and the avant-garde that is evidenced in each of his works.

The dominant theme throughout his extensive and lavish creative work is Man, in a metaphysical sense. It is the search for Being, beyond space and time, in the events of History, that is, in the epic of Humanity.

Many of his sketches or sculptural groups represent a town, a marching crowd, pilgrimage or procession. In these circumstances, a climate of concentration and deep spirituality surrounds and harmonizes the forms, in a univocal way that determines the movement towards their goal or destination ... They are not dejected figures but full of energy, with a great inner strength that fights and impels the action. There is drama and also dignity in the solemn attitude they assume.

Carlos W. Butin's vision is neither complacent nor superficial. He delves into the depth of the human condition and emerges from there, fellowshipping with those who suffer, work, dream. From this conjunction he transmutes those beings, subjected to the adversities of life, turning them into paradigms of heroism, in the mythological meaning of ancient cultures. In this way he frees them, he exalts them, so that they are the reflection of his message, of his own challenge in the face of the vicissitudes that he faces in his tenacious and daily artistic work.
